Update Typhoon Ondoy/Ketsana report from Craig, October 2nd 2009, Day Five.

displaced people sheltering   desperate for food
Some of the many desperate people at an evacuation centre at 11pm last night waiting for the food you have donated, they had hardly eaten all day.   Some of the thousands living in one evacuation centre where we distribute food.

Friends,

While distributing food and emergency supplies late this evening we were informed to stop all feeding and cleaning work and start preparing for another super typhoon. We have already started preparations. Tomorrow I plan to move into the school so I do not have to walk again! That may mean the end of these emails as I have no internet at the school, also if the typhoon is as bad as they say then we will not be able to communicate. Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. If you pray then please do, I think even Sarah may pray if we are hit by another typhoon! (Sorry Saint Sarah) So much of the area is still flooded and people are still going hungry, do not have drinking water and many are in evacuation centres.

This afternoon I was invited by my friend Roger - the local politician - to meet the President, the Governor (who I also know) and many other senior politicians. The President was informed that our joint effort has raised more for the affected area than all others and we were thanked! Please give yourselves a pat on the back as you have saved lives and helped thousands. However the situation is still desperate and I could not help but think I would have rather been helping people than chatting with the President.

Sandra our great volunteer.
Keeping a list of all people needing donations, very important.
Congress lady, Barangay Captain and a stray waiting for the President.

Sadly my camera broke this morning so not so many photos, some of them are just so depressing that it may be a good thing.

Please know I am humbled by the global response and we have made the press, abs-cbn radio interviewed me and I tried to name check every group that has helped and a UK newspaper has published a story about what we have been doing. The Philippine press may have something tomorrow. We need the press coverage as people need to know the situation is… well words fail me and I have dealt with many disasters including the Payatas dumpsite collapse.

You are saints and I wish you could meet the people whose lives you have helped, just to look into their eyes and see that they know you care.

Blessings with tears in my eyes,

Craig.
